I’m writing this on behalf of a retired person. They are receiving benefits via CPAM and a modest pension of no more than 3,000 euros per year. They are also planning on receiving revenue from ad hoc business sources:
- royalties and book advances
- lecture fees
- editing, ghost writing and coaching
- content development
This ad hoc revenue will be less than 30,000 euros a year.
Given that French is not their first language, they are considering working through a portage company which will take care of the business registration and charges, however they are concerned about maintaining social security benefits and CPAM coverage into retirement. They charge a flat 7% to 8% fee on all revenue.
- If they sign up under a portage company, can they maintain their benefits earned through retirement?
- If they register a business and declare all revenues as an auto-entrepreneur, could they lose their regime status with the CPAM?
- How would they maintain their health care coverage into retirement from further professional activity and what is the process for switching regimes?
- Would the cost of setting up either (portage salarial or micro-entrepreneur) be greater than the revenues earned based on cotisation and social security contributions?
