Do I need a TVA number if I do business outside of France as an auto-entrepreneur?

I see other queries about the need for a TVA number as an auto-entrepreneur, but am still a bit confused. I heard recently that an auto-entrepreneur business with customers outside of France would still need a TVA number - is this correct? If so how would it work - do I add the TVA number to my bill, but not charge for it as I am an auto-entrepreneur? Also do my bills need to be in French as well or is it OK if they are just in English?
