Main or secondary income?

We are in the process of setting up a gite, it should be ready for letting mid 2012. In terms of business registration and taxation regimes, one of the first questions seems to be whether this will generate a main or secondary income for us. Are there definitive criteria for deciding what is main / secondary income? Are such criteria available on a French government website? Can you tell us where to look, please?
