When to claim TVA on renovation costs?

Our business, two gites rurale, has been registered as being taxed under the reel regime, as we wanted to be able to claim back TVA on renovation costs. We have just filed in a TVA form, that the tax office helped me to fill out. We have not finished all the renovations so I was advised to hold back on claiming until next year, when all the work will be done. I was a bit concerned about this. Have I understood them correctly?
